I am Tommy Douglas

Thought I would write this quick post before going back on the campaign trail.
I’ve been campaigning for Al Brown, the NDP candidate in Calgary Elbow. So far it’s been exciting working on a real campaign.
Anyways yesterday, I went canvassing in some senior communities. I have to learn to not spend so much time on the door step… I was at one place for 15 minutes being fed cookies and water and being told stories. But the most interesting, yet kind of sad, story of the day was when I ran into a woman who must have been suffering from Alzheimer or some kind of dementia. She spoke in broken English, and was very hard to understand. We managed to hear the words “John Diefenbaker†and “Trudeau†come up before she asked “Whose the best?†I was wearing a Tommy Douglas t-shirt, so we pointed to it and said, “Tommy Douglas!†She looked at me and excitedly said “Oh! I know you! I saw you on TV! Your Tommy Douglas! You changed, oh my!†I didn’t know how to respond, and she was blushing and shaking my hand.
I just can’t fathom suffering with dementia. I can only hope that in the future, health care will have so many advances that it won’t be something I have to worry about.
Anyways, back onto the trail.
