Liberals not running in Central Nova; My first attempt at an attack ad!

Posted by Tyler Kinch on 13th April 2007

It looks like the Liberals have decided not to run a candidate in Central Nova in the next election. As you all know, central Nova is the riding in which Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, is running in the next election.

This may not be such a bad thing for the NDP. Last election, Peter McKay (MP for Central Nova) got 40.5% of the vote. The NDP was not far behind with 33%. Liberals had 24.5% of the vote, and Greens had 1.5% of the vote. The Liberals not being a part of the next election in this riding will definately split the so-called progressive vote. But is the Liberals absence from the next election going to help the greens win? I say no. The greens have 1.5% of the vote. So even if they did the impossible, and managed to get 100% of “Liberal voters”, they’d still only have 26%. They’d have to gain atleast another 7% to be a serious threat to Peter McKay. While on the other hand, the NDP only needs to add 7% more to their total vote to have the same votign results as Peter Mckay did in the last election. I see that as very possible and far more likely than the Greens winning in Central Nova.

Regardless, the way that Elizabeth May doesn’t keep a distance from the Liberals makes me uncomfortable. I will admit, the Greens have been some what of an option for me in the past. I’ve never seen environmental policy out of them that was better than the NDP, but it use to be the place I would float to after abandoning the NDP ship if I were to ever do that. Ever since Elizabeth May became leader though, I’ve changed my plans - I may as well vote Liberal if I’m voting Green. Elizabeth May has aligned herself and her party to close with the Liberals and Stephane Dion in her short time being leader, and it just makes me uncomfortable.

Anyways, I was bored, so I decided to play around in Photoshop. Maybe I should get a job designing attack ads for the Conservatives? I forgot, they don’t like using the word “Global Warming” too much.

PS. I wrote this on limited sleep and no spell-check, so please forgive any mistakes. boredart1.jpg
