Making an Idiot of Himself: Day by Day
Posted by Tyler Kinch on 21st December 2006
Last summer when I went back to Penticton to visit, I happened to take a glance at Stockwell Day’s new billboard. Yes, Stockwell Day has giant billboards all across the Okanagan – Something must make him feel insecure in his very secure riding? Each year that I return to Penticton, the billboard is replaced with another slogan. This year the billboard said: “Stockwell Day: Day by Day”
Me and my girlfriend started to make jokes with the slogan. Basically to the effect of “Stockwell Day: Making Important Decisions Without Looking Into the Future or How it Will Affect Others… Day by Day” Of course our joke slogans were much catchier, thanks to my girlfriend. I’m not so great with words.
Looks like I’m not the only one that’s not so great with words though. I’m sure you’ve read about what Stockwell Day wrote in his weekly column to the Penticton Western. (Not his previous column about Global Warming though, this week’s column) I don’t feel the need to repost it, and I’m sure my visitors are net-savvy enough to find it if they haven’t read it yet. Now what he wrote is being portrayed as racist. Sure, the comment contained a racist word. And I never give up an opportunity to slag a Conservative. But if I may take a right turn here and defend Stockwell Day.
Stockwell Day did not use a racist term… intentionally. It doesn’t take too many brains to figure out doing so would be political suicide. But it does take a wee little bit more brains to go to a dictionary and lookup a word you are not sure of. I think Stockwell Day’s brain capacity is somewhere in between knowing it’s not going to be popular to be racist in 21st century and knowing how to use a dictionary. As his weekly column demonstrated, he hasn’t quite beaten the struggle of using a dictionary. Give him time though, it’s quite a concept to learn … especially with all the cuts done to literacy programs by the Conservative Government.
So, I urge the blogging community to stop slagging (I love that word!) Stockwell Day. Instead, feel sorry for him. He did not get the same quality education as the rest of us in our evil government schools (Refers to the last quote on the page). He probably even had a rough childhood with all the dinosaurs threatening his home and family. Instead of criticizing Day, let’s teach him all the things he didn’t learn in school starting with the basics… “A,B,C,D,E,F…â€
