Softwood Failure

This deal, or whatever you want to call it, is not a success. It is a failure. Sure it is great to finally be able to get this dealt with after so many years, but we lost. Stephen Harper conceded defeat on behalf of all Canadians when he made this “deal”.
First of all, by doing this, Harper has caused many industries in the United States to think they can get away with the same thing. The tariffs put onto Canadian softwood lumber were illegal as many international bodies pointed out. But the industry in the United States and the United States government is getting away with it
with no punishment, and they get to keep twenty percent of the money they stole from us too! It looks like crime does pay when you are in politics. By only demanding that eighty percent of these tariffs be returned, we are saying that the United States was somewhat innocent with these illegal tariffs. Well they were not. Other industries in the United States right now are seeing this they will eventually start to think, “Hey we can do this too. Lobby the government to put illegal tariffs on products coming from Canada. We would have a competitive advantage for years as the Canadians take a long time to respond. And when they do respond, they will only ask for some of the money back.”
These tariffs were illegal and Stephen Harper failed once again.
