Where I can fly
Posted by Tyler Kinch on December 26th, 2006
Thanks Berlynn for your suggestion on where I should travel on my possible cross country trip. I’m still deciding on whether or not I will be doing this. The positives are that it will probably be a long time before I have the chance to do something like this again, and I will learn more about Canada. The negatives are the costs other than the flights (I’m getting the flights for dirt cheap). I’d really have to budget for it, and try and stay at other people’s houses when I could or find really great hostels. School is another concern… but I don’t have classes on Mondays, so I could still do this with only missing a class or two every once in a while, which I am sure I could catch up on. I’ll let you all know when I decide.
Anyways I’ve had a couple of emails from people asking me where I can fly to. Below is a list, so if you are suggesting somewhere that’s outside of these urban centers, let me know of a good way to get there. I don’t drive, so renting a car will not be possible, but I am willing to bus to a few areas if they are worth visiting.

If you’ve only got winter weekends and don’t drive, cities are really all you have.
Here are may three picks.
1) St. John’s, Newfoundland.
It’s and completely different from anything you will experience anywhere else in the country.
And a weekend in Newfoundland will help you understand how Newfoundlanders become such good Albertans (hihnt: they already hate Ottawa.)
2)

OOPS!
Premature posting. I’m sure I can find something to fix that in my spam file.
2) Quebec City. I know its on your longer term visit list, but a weekend in Quebec City is a good start. It is probably my favourite city in Eastern Canada.
The old city is all walkable. Wear your seatbelt in the taxi from the airport.
You don’t need to get far from the old city for your first visit and the public transit is adequate should you need to get to and from the large mall strip.
A very good, more or less traditional French Canadian meal, can be had at Aux anciens canadiens near the Chateau Frontenac.
3) Toronto. If you have someone to show you around, Toronto can be fun.
If I had to pick one, I’d pick Quebec.
The food is (almost) always good and relatively affordable, people are extremely nice and the city is a manageable size.
Enjoy.

A great weekend trip would be to Palm Springs, CA. Warm weather, great hiking, good food and drink… if you need to get away…
