Rent Controls for Albertans Mailing List
Posted by Tyler Kinch on January 16th, 2008

Our group on Facebook has reached over 1700 members! Unfortunately that means we can no longer send messages to the entire group, for the time being. A solution to this is setting up a mailing list, where anyone can sign up to stay up to date on the latest news from our movement.
I promise I will not send out an email more than once a week, unless it is really important.
Please sign up for the “Rent Controls for Albertans” mailing list.

I think it is a disgrace to live in the richest province in Canada and not being able to get decent affordable housing or apartment in this province. I live in Fort McMurray and my present rent is $2,100.00 per month for a 2 bedroom apartment. They want to raise the rent to $2,700.00 starting next June. OK I make decent a salary working in the Oil Sands but I this rate I am no more ahead than if I would be living in BC or Ontario and earning $40,000. per year.
Why do we live in this northern location with very little services? There should be a reward to participate in Alberta’s development. It has a high cost to live here

It is sad that Calgary considered this last year, but it did not pass. I see people constantly being evicted because they either can no longer afford it or their apartment is being transformed into a high-rise or condo.
I do hope that either the Liberals or the NDP do with this time around, to finally end the 37 year long dictatorship of the PCs.
Hopefully, with a change in government we will have many changes in our future.

Before you “demand” rent controls, know what you’re getting into. Unless you actually know what will happen, especially in a market such as Calgary or Edmonton, don’t stick your foot in your mouth.
The reputable CATO institute has written a fantastic piece on rent controls that you should read before you decide to write your letters…
