1000 Albertans For Rent Controls
Posted by Tyler Kinch on January 6th, 2008
Today a facebook group that I created calling on the Alberta Government to implement rent controls has reached 1000 members! This is a major milestone, as many of the members are just ordinary Albertans! Now that it is the new year, I hope to organize events from this group. These events will focus on pressuring government to have more protections for renters. More to come soon!
If you haven’t already joined the group, I encourage you to do so. If you have already, I encourage you to invite all your friends. Can we make to 10,000 members soon? Let’s see!

Thanks for starting this group! I was surprised by how many of my apolitical friends were joining: I think this is a big issue for many Albertans.

I agree that helping the poor is a good idea. However, the history of rent controls has been shown that they are very ineffective. Rent control removes any reason for people to build more housing. It also removes any incentive for landlords to maintain the housing, this is where our “greedy New York landlord” stereotype comes from

Congratulations on achieving a small milestone. I hope you hit the 10000 mark your aiming for.

Could rent control really work in a housing market like Calgary? Wouldn’t owners just choose to sell rather than rent?
